Right Brain Drawing Workshop

Introduction

For the majority of people the ability to create realistic drawings of the world around us seems like an impossible dream. To these individuals, ability in realistic drawing is believed to be solely the province of 'gifted artists' or 'geniuses'. The fact is, with the right tuition, everyone can be taught to draw realistically and achieve a high level of artistic ability. At this point you may be thinking you could never learn to draw but this simply isn't true and this workshop can prove it to you!

Why do most adults draw like children?

For the majority of people, the ability to express themselves in drawing ends around 11 or 12 years of age. At this age children are usually trying to create drawings of the world around them in very intricate detail and with the emphasis on realism. Unfortunately, this type of drawing is usually beyond the current skill level of most children and so they become frustrated at what seems to be their inability to draw properly. Consequently, many give up drawing altogether.

Also, it is at this point that the education system takes over, putting excessive stress on language-based activities such as literature, spelling, and formal teaching for examinations. Art and other creative activities, often unfortunately considered simply playing, are put firmly to the bottom of the priority list in most schools.

Since usually there is no more proper art tuition given to the children after age 12 years, even when they are allowed art as a subject the tuition is usually sadly lacking, their drawing skills become stuck at the level of a 12 year old. Even throughout adulthood, this same level of limited skill in drawing is evident. Most adults draw like they did when they were a child!

Can realistic drawing be learned?

The simple answer to this question is YES! The problem is NOT an inability to control a pencil on paper. In fact, if you can sign your own name, and most people can (even those with dyslexia), you already have the dexterity with a pencil needed to draw well. What you lack, and which can be very quickly corrected, is the ability to 'see' with your artists eye.

Realistic drawing is now considered to be a basic, learnable skill, like driving or riding a bike, that once mastered stays with you your entire life. There are only five component skills required to be able to draw well:

The Perception of Edges
The Perception of Spaces
The Perception of Relationships
The Perception of Values
The Perception of the Whole (The Gestalt)

Each of the first four skills, when learned in sequence and with the right tuition, will enable you to unlock the door to your artistic talent. The fifth skill, Perception of the Whole, seems to occur naturally once the other basic skills are learnt. Drawing ability is present in everyone, all it needs is to be given the chance to emerge. That is what this drawing workshop will do for you!

The Drawing Workshop

This drawing workshop is an intensive five day course designed to progressively provide you with the four component skills needed to draw well. The methods used in the workshop were devised and perfected by Betty Edwards PhD, and have been proven to give 100% success over the past 25 years. Every single person that has been taught using these methods has made fantastic progress, from not being able to draw at all to being able to create realistic drawings of a high standard, AND SO CAN YOU!

Each day you will be introduced to the concepts concerning the necessary cognitive skills required to draw realistically (put simply learning how the mind 'sees' artistically). These cognitive skills will be reinforced by guided practical tasks designed to unlock your own creativity. Day by day you will feel yourself changing as your inner artist begins to emerge. Also, you will see in your daily practice drawings a remarkable improvement, your transformation from non-artist to artist, as the workshop progresses.

Each day will end with a critique of the days drawings, this is excellent for sharing your personal creative discoveries.
